Le Parnasse médical français: Dictionnaire des médecins-poètes de la France

Compiled by Achille Chéreau · Published 1874 · French with English translation · Wellcome Collection

The only known English translation of Achille Chéreau's 1874 dictionary of French physician-poets.

This text records the medicine of its own time and place. Later evidence has replaced most of its medical claims, and some of its ethical views are no longer accepted. It is not medical advice. Today's standard of care is evidence-based medicine. We present this text as evidence of how medicine thought in its time, and we read it to ask what, if anything, connects its world to ours.
